Building Resilience for Civil Society in South Africa

We cannot stop a wave, but we can learn to ride the wave with confidence and skill!

As organizations go through waves caused by unpredictable circumstances like the COVID 19 pandemic and ever-changing environments, it is the journey of sailing the boat and navigating stormy waters effectively that builds resilience. AfricaX has created a solution to support organisations to navigate change.

This innovative tool was developed by our Thought Partners, Dasra (www.dasra.org) and generously offered to AfricaX so that we can tailor it to South Africa context and needs. It has also been deployed in forums provided by Harvard Business School and Ashoka. AfricaX is the only thought partner in Africa.

We call this approach - AfricaXTRA.

T represents Training, Toolkit and Tangible results.

R represents Resilience, Real and Relevant learning.

A is for Accountability and Action!

AfricaXTRA enables every NGO, organisation and corporate CSR to assess, adapt and act in response to dynamic scenarios and thus emerge stronger through different waves of transformation. In today's chaotic world, knowledge and learning empowers you to gain control over your future. With AfricaXTRA your organisation can be uniquely positioned for success and impact in the "new future"; be positioned as a valuable employer with capacity building skills or can take advantage of new opportunities in fundraising. Interested in the Sustainable Development Goals? AfricaXTRA can support the building of institutional resilience which will allow your organization to optimize its impact and be a catalyst to effective action, especially during or after a crisis.

Please contact us on hello@africax.global to secure your space on the upcoming workshop. Price per organisation is R6,000 and workshops go live from on 5 October 2020.

Your benefits:

There are two key pillars to the AfricaXTRA Approach:

  1. The Toolkit - an online self-assessment of the organisation with a gap analysis, recommended decisions framework and a tailored report specific to the NGO. See below for samples of the Toolkit.

  2. Training and Capacity Building - building on the Toolkit, individuals within the organisation can obtain, improve, and retain the skills, knowledge, and resources matched to the gap analysis of the Toolkit report.

AfricaXTRA Process

AfricaX Toolkit

This Toolkit is a successful, global, dynamic diagnostic Stress Test coupled with a decision guide that enables organizations to emerge stronger post a turbulent situation. The availability of this tool has been made possible by DASRA, India. DASRA, have offered their blueprint to AfricaX as part of collective support network to develop capacity building on the African continent. This has been tailored to the South Africa context so that organizations can identify their gaps, diagnose their risk matrix, work through stress scenarios, pro-actively plan future decisions and re-align evolving priorities. Greater emphasis is placed on strengthening institutional capacities of; business planning, financial & funding situations, and team management in order for an organization to tide over a crisis while sustaining its impact to the best extent possible.

The AfricaX toolkit is a self-assessment evaluation of an organisation designed to highlight factors contributing to organizational stress. It considers aspects such as fund flow status and talent health, along with programmatic aspects focusing on the ability to deliver programs during a turbulent period. These are critical factors in building resilience. Supplemented with the solutions-oriented decision guide, the AfricaX toolkit serves as a tool for organizations to identify top priority actions that will reduce stress levels and help over-ride turbulence.

Components of AfricaXTRA Toolkit

Training and Capacity Building

AfricaX has curated a special library of 100+ courses to ensure maximum impact and to build organisational resilience.

Sample of Section II. INSITUTIONAL RESILIENCE

Recommended Actions

Given Test Organization is in Fight for Survival zone with High Risk on the institutional resilience dimension, AfricaX recommends the below decisions:

Impact Optimization

Sample of Section III. DECISION GUIDE

In addition to the Top Recommended Actions in Section II, this section lays down Decision Guides for both Institutional Resilience & Impact Optimization that provide an extensive list of actions the organization can consider alleviating key stress factors and move towards stabilization. These actions are categorized as:

No Regret Moves : For Low Risk Variables; Can be taken on an immediate basis to induce efficiencies.

Risk Mitigation Moves : For Moderate Risk Variables; Can typically be planned and taken over a period of 3-4 weeks.

Extraordinary Moves : For High Risk variables; May call for tremendous change but are potentially the only decisions that can ensure survival of the organization .

* Please refer to Section II. 'Component Level Risk Assessment' to identify risk levels for each variable and determine the relevant decision category corresponding to the level of risk.
